I'm going to be on the north shore of Kauai next week and I'm planning to
take a sunset cruise. There are several companies which do them, mostly
from the south shore. I think there's just one which goes from Hanalei and
that's Captain Sundown. I'd be curious to hear about anyone's experience
with these cruises.

Did it feel crowded?

Was the food decent?

How much of the Na Pali coast did they cover?

Anything else you'd care to tell me!

Thanks,
Maxine

I hiked a good part of the Na Pali trail, and it was absolutely
wonderful. It's not a difficult hike, although a bit slippery and
muddy in places. I never took the cruise, sorry.

Yes, I've done that as well. Very spectacular. This year we're going to try
the cruise. Thanks for your reply.

There were local people hiking it in flip-flops when I was there,
including one man with a toddler on his shoulders.. I only hiked about
2 hours in; maybe it gets more difficult. I didn't have hiking shoes,
and it was so splippery that I finally removed my shoes altogether and
hiked barefoot. My friend had bought hiking boots in Honolulu for the
occasion and they got so muddy, inside and out, that I don't think she
ever succeeded in cleaning them. My daughters hiked in sneakers, and
that was ideal, as they could be washed afterwards.

I did a Na Pali cruise from one of the south shore companies a few years
ago, although it was not a sunset cruise. I just want to mention that at
least when I went, the water was really choppy as soon as you rounded the
corner from the south side of the island and started up the west coast. The
waves were 6-8 feet at least for a good portion of the trip in the open
ocean, and the tour operators told everyone to sit down for part of the trip
due to safety concerns. I was traveling with a friend who got horribly
seasick. He has been on several small boat trips before and never had a
problem, but there were at least 4 or 5 people on this trip who all got
sick. Our cruise was in the morning and in October; the ocean conditions
may be different at other times.

Thanks for the info. I guess that's always a risk.
